Calendar Quilt Challenge Update

This isn't a great picture, but here's my "block" for January for the Calendar Quilt Challenge. I hesitate to admit this, but I don't like it. I can't imagine that I'm going to like the finished quilt either. I haven't sewn anything for February, even though it's now March 1st. I'm considering making a much narrower strip (like 3 inches wide) for the remaining months and then making more of a Chinese coins quilt. I'd probably do it something like this one that I made for my cousin, with lots of blank space around the 12 strips.

What do you all think?

I'm not loving it, and I'm not sure I want to spend the time on it when I could do something I'd love more, but I hate to give up on something.

  1. please dont give up, I understand working on something you are not happy with. I think your idea of the chinese coin quilt like the one you pictured would be a great alternative. Maybe you could cut up your January block to fit this design. Change your thinking, dont give up.......Happy Stitching

  2. lisa...
if you don't like it, we gotta mix it up and make it your own. so that you DO like it.
    :D

i do think that a chinese coin quilt made from these strips would be perfect.
you could make like 2 1/2 X 6 strips and use lots o' white.
it's up to you honey. but i think that would be SUPER cute.

  3. I am with Rachel, you need to do what YOU like.

I don't have a suggestion, but I have decided to change mine too, and do more of a colour theme for each month...We will be the ones with the finished quilt (unless you plan on giving it away) so it is important that you like it, also you will see this while working on it for the whole year!

  4. I'm at the same point. I started off excitedly but then decided I didn't like January and have got stuck since as to what to do. I still like the idea but I am reluctant to continue if I won't like the finished quilt.

I think the coin quilt idea is a good one though.

  5. I do like it!! :-) I'm doing mine basically the same way....I think I cut my pieces 2 1/2 x 6 1/2", but can't remember for sure. It's been awhile since I've worked on mine because we're in the middle of moving! My friend, Susan, has hers finished and did it like this. She put fairly wide sashings between the rows of different blending tone on tone fabrics depicting the four seasons. It looks awesome!! I'm putting quite a few novelty prints in mine depicting what I did each day...maybe that's what gives it the interest? But, you do have to do what you like, but I think this quilt becomes lovely when you add the sashings. Hope that makes sense? If I have a chance, I'll take a picture of my progress so far and post a picture on the blog.

  6. This supposed to be fun and if you are not happy with it. Change it. It is your quilt and you are the one working on it. Have you looked at the entries before yours? Look back on the blog and you might get some more ideas. I like the Chinese coins quilt. Quilting should be fun so don't stress or feel bad about not doing it. Do what you like.
